The best way to jailbreak your iPod Touch
May 7th
THIS DOES NOT WORK WITH THE IPOD TOUCH 2G
Well, I think that is the fastest that my instructions have become obsolete. I guess WinPwn is still ok, but QuickPwn seems so much more convenient and easy to use. It supports all versions of 2.0 and 1.1.5 is hackable with ZiPhone, so you don’t need this tutorial for that version. The QuickPwn video is available at on YouTube here
1. Get QuickPwn
- Download QuickPwn here
- Unzip QuickPwn and get it running
2. Use QuickPwn (pretty easy)
- When you first start QuickPwn, a window will pop up asking you to select the current device you have plugged in. Select yours.
- Select the file of the firmware that you are currently running (
- To find firmware files downloaded via iTunes, follow these directions. Open a folder and go to My Computer. Go to the Tools tab and click the view tab. Then click Folder Options and click “view hidden files and folders”, then click ok. Now follow this path. . Click Local Disc C, Documents and Settings, USERNAME, Application Data, Apple Computer, iTunes, iPod Software Updates. There are your downloaded firmwares.
- Make sure all three options are clicked and then click the next arrow
3. The Command Line
- For those of you not familiar with the command line, this might be a little scary. Just read what it tells you to do and do it.
- It will first ask you to turn off your iPod/iPhone. Press enter when done
- The next part is kinda weird. I think what they are trying to do is a DFU mode. Whatever. Just follow the instructions. First, you will hold the power button for five seconds. Then you will hold power AND home for ten seconds. Then you will release the power button and just hold home for up to thirty seconds (mine stopped at 22). Simple, no?
- When it works, your iPod will turn white. The command line will run aa total of seven operations, showing the percentage points. Somewhere along the line of operations, the Pwn logo will pop up on your iPod.
- The logo will disappear and the refresh circle will be spinning for about twenty to thirty seconds
- The iPod will turn off and then on
- Now you are done with the Pwning
4. Final touches
- On your iPod/iPhone, go to Settings, General, Auto-Lock, and set it to 5 minutes
- Go to Cydia and let it install its updates and such
- Go to Sections, All Packages, and select BossTool and install it
- Once installed, exit Cydia and open BossTool
- Move the fonts. This might take a while, but just wait until it says “Fonts Already Moved”
- Open Cydia, Go to Manage, click BossTool, select Modify, and remove it
5. If you want to deal with Installer
- Open Installer and go to categories and select sources. Install Community Sources
- If this doesn’t work, go to the sources tab and try to refresh the source there
- Keep checking Installer and wait for updates and a version that isn’t beta
There you go. A much simpler way to hack your iPod. Note that restoring after doing this is rather difficult and requires many tries. It will not restore to firmware 1.1.5 after hacked. If only we had the good old revamped and ready ZiPhone…

Top 10 PS3 tips and tricks
Apr 15th
The PS3, you can do a lot with Sony’s games console, such as playing games and watching Blu-ray movies. But there is more, much more to the console than meets the eye. This is Absolute Gadget’s guide to getting the most out of you next-generation console.
Tip no. 1 – Start your game where someone else left off
Sometimes you just can’t get past that boss creature in Tomb Raider and it can really start grating after numerous instances of Lara Croft dying. So what better way of getting over it then skipping past the difficulty on onwards to the next level.
The way to do this is search online for “PS3 games saves”. There are literally thousands of these lying around the internet so you can pick up someone else’s finished or half finished game. Simply save this to a USB memory stick and upload it to your PS3. In the relevant game you can head to the menu and select the USB drive inserted and copy it to your hard drive. Et voila, you’ve got past the big baddie. Shame you didn’t do it for yourself – where’s the achievement?
Tip no.2 – Check your gamepad’s charge level
The wireless gamepad’s one drawback it that you can’t tell how much juice is left. And you only find out when the game no longer responds to you button pressing and you die horribly. The way to ensure you have enough power to finish Grand Theft Auto (or any game) is to press and hold the PS button. An indicator will appear and will show up on screen as a small battery. A full battery means you are fully-charged up and ready to play.
Tip no.3 – Make a free video phone call
Ever wanted to chat to your fellow gamers and even see what they look like? No, well sorry we are going to tell you. For this you need to have a USB headset and an EyeToy camera (if you haven’t got them – go out now and buy them we’ll be waiting until you come back).
Once they are both plugged in you simply choose a friend and press triangle. select Start New Chat and write them a message. If they are also playing online at the same time as you, they will be given the option to accept your videochat.
At this point if they too have the necessary equipment then two windoes will open showing you and your chum, so you can chat away. And it doesn’t stop there – you can have up to six gamers joining in the video fun at any one time and all for free!
Tip no.4 – How to reset the video settings
Yes you have your PS3 set to output pictures to your glorious high-definition television, but then your mate calls you up and want you to come around to play your PS3 on his small portable telly. Trouble is that you won’t be able to see a screen once hooked up as it is at a different resolution (i.e. standard definition).
There is a way around this. switched off your PS3 and then restart while pressing and holding the power button. This resets the PlayStation 3 to its basic resolution setting and from there you will be able to choose the defition and cable connection from there ensuring lots of fun for you and a friend.
How To Zip And Encrypt Your Documents For Free
Feb 16th
Do you remember how long ago you have heard about Zip for the first time? I think it was even before Windows was invented. Internet was an unknown word yet at that time. Computers were DOS operated and the instructions for compressing and decompressing documents seemed like magic words to me. What I didn’t know by then, but I’ve just found out tonight is that the .zip standard was invented by PKWARE. This explains why those commands were starting with pkzip and pkunzip. For those of you who are interested, PKWARE is giving away a non-commercial use license of a much more modern version of zip, the SecureZIP Express. Not only it is free of charge, but you have the chance to win cool prizes in the new “Decrypt and Drive” contest.
SecureZIP Express has several useful features. The basic ones are compressing/decompressing and encryption of files that you store or send. Compressing files is a great way to save storage space, especially on memory sticks and CDs; besides, there are situations in which we want our files to be secured, as they are not meant to be seen by anybody. The software also includes a digital certificate so you can exchange files securely with others without using passwords. Only the person the file was encrypted for can open it when you use a digital certificate. SecureZIP Express has no toolbars or spyware. For years, PKWARE has given free .zip software away. Now, together with the software, they are giving away a lot of prizes including a Honda scooter, bicycles, Wii games, gas cards, and more.
For entering the contest, you need to visit www.DecryptandDrive.com, download the free software, then come back to play the game. You need to have SecureZIP, and the digital certificate it installs, on the computer you play the game from. SecureZIP Express is also available for download at www.securezip.com. Good luck and let me know if you win something.
